Beim Versuch die sterblichen Überreste von Leon Dreyer aus 270m Tiefe in der Bushmangaft Höhle in Südafrika zu bergen ist Dave Shaw tödlich verunglückt.
Mein aufrichtiges Beileid seiner Frau Ann und seinen Kindern Steven und Lisa.
Antwort von Armin am 08.01.2005 - 23:36 Boesmangat, Northern Cape - Police said on Saturday afternoon there was little chance of an Australian diver returning from the depths of the world`s third deepest freshwater cave, where an operation to recover the remains of another diver has been called off.
When asked if there was a chance of Dave Shaw resurfacing from the depths of Boesmansgat, police diver Inspector Theo van Eeden shook his head and said: "Hy`s weg (He`s gone)."
Van Eeden had been waiting for Deon Dreyer`s body to be passed up to him at 220m.
Shaw disappeared at 270m where he was supposed to secure the body and relay it past fellow divers to get it to the surface.
When he failed to return to his team-mate Don Shirley, waiting at 220m, Shirley descended to 250m to look for him.
He communicated to the surface through messages written on slates passed up a rope that Shaw`s light had disappeared.
Vomiting and disorientated - symptoms of decompression illness - Shirley was forced to start a slow ascent on Saturday afternoon. At the surface he will immediately be placed in a recompression chamber.
By mid-afternoon Shirley was the only one of eight divers remaining in the water.

Kein Buddy!? - na ja, wird wohl auch nicht so viele geben, die da mittauchen ohne sich selbst oder ander zu gefähren. Außerdem denke ich, daß der Dave Shawn wußte auf was er sich einlässt.

Diver Dave Shaw, who died on a mission to recover the body of a fellow diver, stopped moving and breathing exactly 26-minutes into the dive.
Shaw`s last minutes were captured by a helmet-mounted camera he had been wearing during his final cave dive. In an extraordinary twist to Saturday`s cave-diving tragedy, the remains of 20-year-old Deon Dreyer and of Shaw were brought to the surface yesterday along with the camera.
Gordon Hiles, a TV cameraman and scuba diver who was filming the dive mission for a documentary and who designed the camera Shaw was wearing, today described what the retrieved footage shows.
"The way we had the camera set up shows everything in front of Dave as well as all his hand movements," Hiles explained.
The film shows Shaw entering the water at 6.14am on Saturday and then submerging into the cave.
"He gets to the bottom and moves towards Deon`s body and pulls out the specially made bodybag. He goes through the activity of getting the bag around the body. Then you see him rotating the body and realising the tanks are not jammed, they`re loose, he attempts to get the bag over the tanks as well. Then at that point there`s no more activity and Dave goes back to the shot line to start his ascent," Hiles said.
"But then exactly 26 minutes into the dive all activity stops and then his breathing as well. Nothing specific shows what kind of problem he was having, but the footage will be reviewed by various experts to try and determine exactly what is going on."
Yesterday the bodies floated to the top of the cave together, on a cave line left underwater in October after Shaw found the body of Dreyer, who died in the cave 10 years ago.
The bodies were found at 20m in the freshwater cave. Shaw was stuck against the roof and Dreyer`s remains were dangling below, suspended by the entangled cave line. They were dislodged during an attempt by divers Peter Herbst and Petrus Roux who had returned to the cave to recover dive tanks left attached to the shot line.
"On the tape you can hear Dave breathing. Harder and harder and harder. Then there`s silence," said Herbst, still in his drysuit after retrieving the bodies last night.
"It`s much too soon to say exactly what went wrong but, from the bit of footage I`ve just seen, it appears that Dave was working too hard," said Herbst. At first it looks like everything was going fine. He`d got to the body and he was working.
"From the footage it appears that Dave`s breathing then started to get worse and worse - a sign that he was working too hard," Herbst said. "It looks as if he ran out of time. It looks like he tried to give up and get out, but he got entangled in the cave line. He kept trying to cut the line, but he couldn`t."
A few minutes after surfacing on October 28, Shaw told Dreyer`s parents that he would try his best to retrieve the body.
"He looked me in the eye and told me he would do his best to fetch my son," Theo Dreyer said.
The surfacing of the remains of their son has devastated Dreyer`s mother, Marie.
"She has pushed for this for a long time. But now that it`s happened she`s completely upside down. She`s at the absolute bottom now and will have to go through a whole grieving process before she can go on," said Mr Dreyer today.
The couple were present at the cave on Saturday when Shaw undertook his mission to recover their son`s body. And they were there when it was realised that Shaw had died in the attempt.
hen yesterday, while driving home from work, Mr Dreyer received a phone call from a journalist who told him both bodies had surfaced in the cave.
"It was an absolute shock. I can`t describe it. And now Marie is completely upside down," he said.

Er war der Sicherungstaucher bei dem missglückten Versuch, Deons Leiche zu bergen. Er hat, wie alle anderen, die in diese Unternehmung involviert waren, seine Erlebnisse dem Buchautor Phillip Finch geschildert, der selber Höhlentaucher ist. Nun ist das Buch "Raising the dead" im Handel Erhältlich. Leider wurde der Drucktermin etwas gepushed, so dass sich einige Fehler eingeschlichen haben. Beim Lesen sind die aber verzeihlich. Und bis Don selber mal die YBOD zur Seite legt und nen Buch schreibt wird wohl noch ne Weile dauern... Also, wer die ganze Geschichte mittreissend geschrieben einmal erfahren möchte, dem kann ich das Buch nur empfehlen: ISBN 978 0 00 726524 4 Es ist bei Harper Sport erschienen und bisher nur in englischer Sprache erhältlich.
