DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental, Philippines -- A Filipino scuba diver died while his dive buddy was injured on Saturday after diving off Apo Island in Dauin town, Negros Oriental province.
Mario Pascobello, Apo Island barangay captain, identified the fatality as Raymond Gonzaga of Bacolod City. His dive buddy, Michael Sarrosa, said to be a nephew of Negros Occidental Governor Joseph Marañon, was rushed to Cebu City for treatment of decompression sickness.
Decompression sickness, also called the bends, is caused by nitrogen bubbles forming in the bloodstream and tissues of the body. The bubbles occur if one moves from deep water towards the surface (where the surrounding pressure is lower) in too short a time.
Gonzaga and Sarrosa were part of a team of about 15 divers who came on board a pump boat from Liloan town in Cebu province late Saturday morning.
They dove without a local dive guide off Coconut Point in the northern side of Apo, considered the island`s most dangerous point because of the treacherous current, which spreads in four directions.
Separated
Pascobello said the two divers, bringing two scuba tanks each, entered the water ahead of their companions and were separated from the group.
After 28 minutes under water, Gonzaga surfaced and collapsed after getting into the pump boat. He never regained consciousness, Pascobello said.
Pascobello said Sarrosa was able to resurface and got into another pump boat where he found a spare scuba tank. He immediately went on a decompressing dive.
A decompression dive makes a diver stay at a fixed safe depth for several minutes to allow the nitrogen accumulated in the body to escape from the bloodstream.
Pascobello said that from all indications, the two divers got the "bends" or decompression sickness. This happens when divers go too deep or go beyond the prescribed time limit under water.
In the case of the two divers, they went beyond the safe diving depth of 130 feet, as indicated by the data on their portable dive computers.
Pascobello said one diver registered having gone to a depth of 100 meters, or about 300 feet, but surfaced after only 28 minutes -- not enough time for them to decompress.
Then they climbed to 15 meters and Sarrosa surfaced four times "as if seeking assistance."
Pascobello said Gonzaga was probably the fifth diver and the first Filipino diver to die while diving off Coconut Point on Apo Island in recent years.
The other casualties were two Japanese, an American and a German.
Pascobello stressed that the incident could have been avoided had they hired local dive guides familiar with the currents in the various dive spots in the island.
Rescue crews found the body of a missing scuba diver Sunday afternoon.
Fire officials say the 44-year-old man was swimming toward shore with his daughter when he disappeared.
They, along with two other family members, had been scuba diving Sunday morning.
Investigators say the man, who was from Iowa, told his family he wanted to get back to shore because he was tired and his legs hurt.

An Iowa family in Hawaii on vacation is dealing with the loss of a father in a scuba diving accident.
Members of the Conley family were scuba diving off Kahe Point Beach Park in Waianae before noon Sunday when the father felt numb, cut his dive short - and later drifted to sea.
Mrs. Conley tells KGMB9 news she was diving with her son while her husband, Craig Conley, went diving with her daughter.
Emergency officials said the father felt numbness about 10 minutes into the dive and came up to the surface with the daughter. On the way back in from the aborted dive, the daughter lost track of the father.
Emergency officials launched an intense search.
Two hours later, they found Craig Conley`s body several miles from shore.
From the nwrebreather list.
>The fatal accident took place on 5th March 2005 in a quarry called >Jaworzno Szczakowa, south of Poland. Conditions outside air temperature >around 0 Centigrade. The quarry was iced around 20 centimetres of solid ice.
>The accident took place during the dive that was part of the rebreather course. Both divers were using SCR Draeger Dolphin. At the end of the dive which was ice dive, around 20 minutes after descending at the depth of around 26 29 ft with the distance to the platform of around 32 ft one of the divers lost consciousness. He ascended to the surface and then droped down to the bottom (the maximum depth 49 ft). His buddy was not able to bring him up by himself so he ascended and alarmed another diver. The second one went to the water immediately and both of them got the unconscious diver to the surface. The CPR was started immediately, ambulance came after 7 minutes. CPR was done for about 40 minutes without a success. Paramedics said it was probably a heart attack.
Eight escape sinking dive boat By Alex Murdoch and John Sheed March 07, 2005 EIGHT people have told of swimming for their lives after their dive boat sank in bad weather off the South-East Queensland coast.
The boat started to sink just before 6pm (AEST) yesterday at the northern end of Big Woody Island near Hervey Bay, forcing everyone into the water, Police said.
Diver John McDonald believed the boat had simply been unable to cope with the rising swells.
"The wind came up a fair bit this afternoon and the boat just seemed to have got a bit side on or back on to the swell there and just got swamped and then rolled over," he said.
Diver Cathie Horne said the group of six divers and two crew had clung to the upturned boat for more than an hour waiting for help that never arrived.
"It didn`t look that far (to the island) until we started swimming, ... but it was a bit rough out there and there wasn`t any boats around," Ms Horne said.
"So we decided ... before it got pitch dark, we`d better start swimming towards the island."
Police said six of the eight people were plucked from the water by the crew of a volunteer marine rescue boat, while two others were picked up from a beach on the island.
Ms Horne said they had survived the 2km swim through treacherous waters by sticking together and keeping an eye on each other.
The alarm was raised when the divers fired flares, which were spotted on the mainland 4km away.
Their rescuers said they were lucky to be alive, because an outgoing tide through the strait would have definitely pushed them out to sea.
Despite the ordeal, Ms Horne said she was looking forward to getting back into the water.
"Well I guess I`ll have to wait for them to salvage the boat and dry it off first but yeah, I`m definitely looking forward to diving still," she said.
