CEBU, Cebu, Philippines -- (UPDATE) A Japanese diving instructor was found dead in the waters off Cordova town in Mactan Island early morning on Tuesday while another Japanese diver remained missing, police said.

The body of Masahiro Kajita, 25, of Eichi, Japan, was found by fishermen floating several meters from the shore of Barangay (village) Catarman, Cordova shortly after 5 a.m.

His companion, Chihiro Nawa, 20, of Yamagata, Japan, remains missing.

The two went diving around 9 p.m. Monday at the port of Barangay Suba-Basbas, Lapulapu City, two kilometers from where Kajita`s body was found.

The two Japanese arrived in Cebu last June as translators and diving instructors at the Pacific Cebu Resort.

Officials at the resort where they were staying raised an alarm after the two failed to return from diving

ONE DEAD, ANOTHER MISSING: Night diving claims 2 Japs

by Ryan P. Borinaga
November 10, 2004

A Japanese national drowned while a compatriot went missing after apparently running out of oxygen while scuba diving off Mactan Monday night.

The body of Masahiro Kajita, 25, was found floating lifeless by fishermen off barangay Catarman in the municipality of Cordova, some two kilometers from the Pacific Cebu Resort in barangay Basbas, Lapulapu City where he and his companion, Chehiro Nawa, 20, had been staying.

Investigations showed the two Japanese left the resort at about 9 p.m. Monday to go night diving.

Early morning fishermen came upon the lifeless Kakita some seven hours later, at about 4 a.m. Tuesday.

Nawa is now the subject of continued search by the Navy and Coast Guard.

The initial suspicion is that both divers ran out of air but the body of Kajita is to be subjected to an autopsy to determine if no foul play had been involved in his death.

Police probers found the airtank used by Kajita empty. Its regulator also appeared to have detected an unspecified error.

Antonio Bande Jr., the manager of Pacific Cebu Resort, told Lapulapu City police chief Louie Oppus that before Kajita and Nawa, went off to dive that fateful night, they had their picture taken by another Japanese identified only as certain Ogara.

Ogara reportedly asked Kajita and Nawa where they were going and was told they were off for a night of diving.

Bande said Ogara was actually invited to go along but declined.

When it appeared the two Japanese were taking too long to return, Ogara reportedly begun feeling worried.

When the duo still did not return after two hours, Ogara decided to inform the resort management. A search was mounted and when that proved futile, the Coast Guard was informed.

Nawa was supposed to fly back to Japan this month while Kajita was expected to return home in December.

Bande said the two were actually members of the resort staff from Japan who were asked to come to Cebu to help in a Japanese language course for students.

Bande said the resort diving area was just 600 meters from the shoreline.

The families of the two Japanese have already been informed.

The search for the missing Japanese diver in Lapu-Lapu City has continued with rescuers from both the government and private sectors now covering other parts of the Visayas.

Lapu-Lapu City police chief Louie Oppus said he was informed by Antonio Bande, Jr., general manager of the Pacific Cebu Resort, that rescuers for diving instructor Chechiro Nawa are now scouring the seawaters off Bohol and Leyte.

?Gipahibawo ta nga nagpadayon gihapon ang ilang pagpangita sa nawala nga si Nawa,? Oppus said.

Oppus said divers from private organizations have joined rescuers from the Cebu Coast Guard, Philippine Air Force and the Naval Forces Central of the military?s Central Command in the search for Nawa.

According to Oppus, they are also coordinating with barangay officials in the city, Cordova town and in Bohol and Leyte for the rescue operations.

Nawa, 20, from Yamagata, Japan, was one of two divers who left the Pacific Cebu Resort in barangay Suba-Basbas last Monday night for scuba diving.

The following morning, fishermen found the lifeless body of 25-year-old Masahiro Kajita in the seawaters off barangay Catarman, Cordova. Both Japanese were members of the resort staff from Japan who were asked to come to Cebu to help Japanese students learn scuba diving.

Kajita?s body was flown back to Japan by his parents the other day.

Lapu-Lapu police investigators have found that the air tank used by Nawa was empty, speculating that the two divers could have ran out of air during their dive.

But they are also looking into the possibility of a foul play behind the incident.
