AN off-duty police officer disappeared while scuba diving off Sydney today.
Storms hampered a huge air, land and sea search for the 50-year-old man who went missing while diving with six colleagues on a social trip at South Head. The group noticed him missing about 11am (AEDT) when they surfaced, a police spokesman said.
Four police and two volunteer boats, the police air wing and a Westpac helicopter joined a land party to search the area around South Head.
Afternoon thunderstorms and murky water due to recent rain made the search difficult, the spokesman said.
