Suche nach vermissten CCR Taucher in GB abgebrochen Abgesandt von Michael Waldbrenner am 23.06.2005 - 01:13:
Search for missing diver called off
Northumbria Police has said it will not be ordering searches for a diver who disappeared on 5 June while carrying out a deep dive off the North East coast.
The diver has been named as Nicholas Jackson, 25, from Newcastle. He is now classified as missing, presumed dead.
Inspector John Watts, of Northumbria Police Marine Unit, told Divernet that five regular technical diverssearched the wreck area on 6 June from the charter boat Spellbinder II, but found no trace of Jackson. He added that, from the polices standpoint, no further searches would be ordered.
It has emerged that the fatal 57m dive, which involved four rebreather divers, was a very long one involving an hour of bottom time. Inspector Watts said the last diver out of the water had a total dive time of 3 hours, 42 minutes.
Inspector Watts confirmed that the divers raised three portholes from the wreck, and Jackson is known to have removed one of the pieces and sent it to the surface, before he got into difficulties.
Divernet News, dateline 7 June 2005 Diver lost on deep dive
A diver is missing after disappearing during a 57m wreck dive off the North East coast. The diver was in a group of four diving on the Dannies wreck, 7 miles east of Coquet Island, off the River Amble.
The incident occurred in the afternoon on 5 June. The divers` chartered hardboat Spellbinder II put out an emergency call and searches were carried out by a helicopter from RAF Boulmer, RNLI all-weather and inshore lifeboats, several fishing boats, and a Sea King helicopter from HMS Illustrious, which was in the area.
Search conditions were reasonable, with a moderate Force 3 wind and an overcast but acceptably clear sky, except in occasional showers. However, no trace of the diver was found.
Both Humber Coastguard and Northumbria Police Marine Unit have confirmed that all four divers were using rebreathers and, while operating loosely in a group, were effectively diving solo. Two were using distance lines attached to the wreck shotline, while the other two were unattached. It is one of these divers who was lost.
An inspector at Northumbria Police Marine Unit has described the divers as from the Newcastle area, and part of a group which uses Spellbinder II regularly. He confirmed that, on 6 June, sport divers were out again on the boat conducting a diving search around the wreck.
If the missing diver is not located, further searches may be considered. These would be contracted out to commercial divers or ROV operators, as the depth of the Dannies wreck exceeds that to which Northumbria Police Marine Unit is permitted to dive.
It is with great sadness, that I have been asked, as a Moderator at RBW, to post the following statement from the friends of the Rebreather diver reported as missing in the North Sea:
"Following reports in the press, the missing diver in the North has been named as Nick Jackson, 25 Years Old.
As friends and fellow divers of Nick, from both Newcastle University Sub Aqua Club, and at Tyneside 114, we are deeply saddened, and our heartfelt sympathy is particularly with his family, his girlfriend Emily, and with others that knew him.
From the start of his training, Nick was always extremely enthusiastic about diving. He was a lovely person, a good diver, a keen club and committee member, and a friend to many. That he has been lost to us is a great shock. The details and circumstances of what happened are as yet undetermined."
