HIGHLAND, Utah Two brothers died while scuba diving inside a 1,200-foot long tube at the bottom of an irrigation canal, police said.
Their bodies were found Thursday by rescue teams, Utah County Sheriff`s Sgt. Spencer Cannon said. They had been reported missing about 10 p.m. MDT Wednesday.
Family members of the unidentified men were at the rescue scene, and were given time to grieve with each body, he said.
Their identities were not immediately released.
The bodies were recovered inside the concrete tubelike structure at the bottom of the canal, which had been drained to a 3-foot level to allow search and rescue divers safe access.
The divers, wearing wet suits and using rock climbing gear, rappelled down the 100-foot concrete tube.
The 8-foot-wide pipe first takes water 100 feet down a chute. The current then picks up speed as it travels along a straight line. The water eventually leaves the chute and canal when traveling about 100 feet up the chute, before it is shot into an adjacent farm field.
It was not immediately known how much of an air supply the two missing brothers had with them.
The brothers informed their parents of the scuba diving adventure about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
``They called their parents to say they`d be diving and if they don`t hear from them by 10, to call`` authorities, Cannon said.
Sheriff`s deputies found their car near the canal Wednesday night but didn`t find any diving equipment inside, leading them to believe the two were still in the canal, Cannon said.
Cannon said the 21-year-old lived in Lehi, while the older brother lived in Orem.
