CEBU CITY, Cebu, Philippines -- A Malacañang photographer came close to drowning after taking underwater shots of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo scuba diving off the resort town of Moalboal around 89 km southwest of this city.
Jerry Carual, a photographer with the Office of the President, yesterday said that the mishap occurred between 1 and 2 p.m. on Thursday and that he was unconscious for 3-5 minutes.
Ms Arroyo, who inspected several project sites in southern Cebu on Wednesday, spent private time in Moalboal on Thursday. But Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, who joined her and other national officials in the scuba diving activity, said she was not aware that a Malacañang photographer had been hurt.
Carual said he had to resurface after 45 minutes underwater because his oxygen tank was almost empty. He said that because he went underwater before the President did, he should also have been the first to resurface.
But he was hit by strong waves the moment he resurfaced, Carual said. He said he felt very tired and thought of unstrapping the oxygen tank from his back to use it for floating.
Carual said he had taken in some seawater and was struggling against the strong waves when he lost consciousness.
He was in the Coast Guard vessel named MV Pampanga when he came to shore.
Carual said he learned that it was the President`s close-in security, Sgt. Christian Balajadia, who had taken him aboard a speedboat and then transferred him to the Coast guard vessel.
He said he was put in the MV Pampanga`s decompression chamber for five hours, or from 2 to 7 p.m., and was under the care of a certain Doctor Gueb.
