Taucher ertrunken Abgesandt von Jessica am 26.04.2005 - 00:08:
ROCKLAND - A Camden man drowned Sunday while scuba diving with a female companion in Rockland Harbor. Marine Patrol officer Brian Tolman said the 51-year-old man`s body was recovered from waters off Sandy Beach in the city`s south end more than an hour after he was reported missing. Tolman withheld releasing the man`s name pending notification of family members.
Tolman said the victim was found in about 14 feet of water and rushed by ambulance to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport. The medical examiner said drowning was the cause of death.
Tolman said the man and woman were recreational diving and had left from shore. He said the woman told him the couple proceeded out along the MBNA pier and were on their way back to shore when they separated. The woman said she saw the man swimming in the distance ahead of her, but when she stepped onto the beach there was no sign of him.
The woman went to the Rockland Fire Department for help at 1:03 p.m. The Fire Department launched a two-person inflatable Zodiac craft while the Coast Guard rushed to the area in a 25-foot motor vessel. The Fire Department`s ladder truck was used to help searchers get an elevated view of the water`s surface.
In addition, an HH-60 rescue helicopter was launched from the Coast Guard Air Station on Cape Cod to assist with the search, and dive teams from the Marine Patrol and Maine State Police were dispatched to the scene.
Tolman said he and firefighter Rodney Gibbs powered back and forth in the Fire Department boat looking for a sign of the man, who was wearing a blue wetsuit and flippers and white air tanks.
Tolman said that at one point he looked down and saw two gauges in the murky water. When he probed the area with a boat hook, he realized that he had found the missing diver. The man was pulled from the water at 2:45 p.m.
"They had not had a lot of diving experience," said Tolman. "They had taken some classes and done some diving but had not had a lot of time on their own."
Tolman said the man`s diving gear was sent to the state police crime lab for examination. The accident remains under investigation.
