The missing man was identified as Paul Theriault, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Theriault was diving with a companion identified as Joseph Augusto. Both men are believed to be in their 40s and may come from the Boston, Mass., area, said Ensign Roxanne Jensen, information officer for Coast Guard Group Key West.
Augusto was rescued by the crew of a commercial dive boat, but remained in Mariners Hospital at press time Tuesday.
"The divers had been diving on or near the wreck Northern Light," Jensen said. "The dive vessel recovered one diver who was in and out of consciousness."
The Northern Light is a 19th century cargo ship that sank in 1930 in about 190 feet of water near The Elbow reef off Key Largo. It is a site visited by technical divers who use advanced gear and techniques to reach to shipwrecks and sites below normal sport-diving limits.
The location of the incident was incorrectly identified in initial reports as being at the Spiegel Grove shipwreck.
Theriault and Augusto were described as "experienced technical divers" by a local diver familiar with details the incident. He asked not to be named.
According to one account, Theriault and Augusto were surfacing when Theriault, using a "rebreather" apparatus, suffered a convulsion. It is not known whether his gear malfunctioned or there was another cause.
Augusto reportedly raced his buddy to the surface, but was stricken with decompression sickness, also known as the bends. He was picked up from the dive boat by a Coast Guard helicopter and flown to shore.
"The second diver was not located after multiple searches by two Coast Guard helicopters, Coast Guard Station Islamorada`s small boat, [the] Coast Guard cutter Nantucket, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission vessel, Key Largo Volunteer Fire and Rescue`s dive team, and the Monroe County Sheriff`s Office," Jensen said.
