SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (20 Sep 2004) -- Utah`s medical community is mourning the loss of a popular doctor. Dr. Deborah Robinson died in an accident Friday evening at a lake in Sevier County.

Dr. Robinson was a specialist in internal medicine and was affliated with LDS Hospital. She died Friday about 6:30 in the evening while scuba diving at Fish Lake in Sevier County.

According to the Sevier County Sheriff`s Office, Robinson-- who was 53 and the mother of three-- was scuba diving with a partner. He told investigators they were diving in about 30 feet of water.

They started to work their way to the surface when they became separated at about 15 feet. He could not see her anywhere. Later, with help from people on the shore, Dr. Robinson was found floating in the water.

Dr. Robinson, a graduate of the University of Utah School of Medicine, was known for an adventurous spirit. In 2001 she was part of the Sea Trek expedition sailing across the North Sea in an old clipper ship.

Her colleagues describe her as caring and compassionate.

Jess Gomez/ LDS Hospital Spokesman: "She was a terrific clinician. She was known for her compassion, for her bedside manner, for really taking an interest in her patients, and known for lots of hours at the hospital and lots of hours with her patients."

Gomez says the hospital will be organizing a memorial service for Dr. Robinson.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (29 Sep 2004) -- Salt Lake City physician Deborah Robinson died of "dry-lung drowning" while scuba diving, according to autopsy results released Monday.

Sevier County Sheriff`s Detective Kelvin Williams said Robinson, 53, died when extremely cold water entered her mouth and caused her throat to seize, essentially strangling her. But investigators still do not know all the circumstances surrounding her death Sept. 17 at Fish Lake in south-central Utah. Specifically, detectives are still trying to determine whether it was an accident or the result of faulty equipment.

Forensic investigators are still examining the scuba diving equipment for possible defects. She also may have removed her mask, or it may have become accidentally dislodged.

The air tanks contain a small computer that can provide a "dive profile," Williams said, but they are still waiting for the results. Robinson`s diving partner, Myron Barrett, told police the two were down 30 feet when they got separated. He stopped at 15 feet and looked for her, but her body was not found until hours later.
