TACOMA: Fire, sheriff`s crews search for missing diver
Tacoma Fire Department and Pierce County Sheriffs searched the water off the 4000 block of Ruston Way Saturday night after a diver failed to surface, sheriff`s spokesman Ed Troyer said.
The 24-year-old Seattle man had been part of a three-person commercial diving group and had been missing for almost an hour when the other divers called for help shortly before 9 p.m. The missing man was described as a student diver.
The group had been diving at a depth of 215 feet, which is an extreme depth where people can last for only five minutes, Troyer said.
He said the Pierce County Sheriff`s dive and rescue team was diving underwater but wouldn`t go that deep since it is too dangerous.
"We don`t want to lose people trying to recover a deceased person," Troyer said. King County deputies used a helicopter and the Tacoma Fire Department brought out its fireboat in the hopes of finding the body on the surface.
